My time as a high school teacher taught me how to instantly connect with teens and make them feel comfortable in front of the camera. I love photographing high school seniors all over the Greater Des Moines Metro and Midwest (yes, I’m willing to travel).

Hi, I'm Carrie

When you see photos of a group of high school senior guys & they’re always the same group, most of them you’ve already done their senior photos, you secretly wish that another from that group will contact you to round it out. I’m so thankful that Kyan’s mom contact me to round out his friend-circle who are #ckseniors and complete my summer of shooting!

Sometimes, as photographers, we can get in a groove of repetition because the formula works and the results are quality. I’m so thankful for a summer where every session was different. Maybe 10% repetition and the other 90% was completely new & different. We may have used similar locations, but each student brought something different to the table & I loved the challenge to create something different that reflected them.

Now that the school year has started, I & Kyan’s parents were masked while we were on school grounds, as was Ky whenever I wasn’t photographing him. I am in awe of how well this summer went despite the pandemic, the resiliency of the families I got to know better and the new friends I’ve gained. I am so, so thankful. We started at Warrior Stadium & then headed downtown to highlight Ky’s sweet ride (that started as his mom’s “summer car” but has steadily been upgraded where the men in her life have kinda claimed it as their own).

I’ve used this view before, but never with an open-top jeep! The glowy light we had this particular evening….I could’ve shot here the rest of the session & it took a look at the clock to realize we needed to move on, but it seriously was just a perfect night!

A few dressed up for yearbook & then we headed to Waterworks where I was so thankful the bridge is lit up at night!

Ky, Michelle & Trevor: Thank you so much for trusting me with this part of Kyan’s senior year! I’m humbled and honored to get to photograph you. I wish you all the best as you investigate post high school options. Keep me in the loop-I want to keep cheering you on from the sidelines!

Be well,

Carrie
