My time as a high school teacher taught me how to instantly connect with teens and make them feel comfortable in front of the camera. I love photographing high school seniors all over the Greater Des Moines Metro and Midwest (yes, I’m willing to travel).

Hi, I'm Carrie

I will always remember celebrating Isaiah in the band room as a 6th grade trumpet player – he had finally (finally!) hit a high C! I went so far as to interrupt rehearsal and exclaim to the class that he had finally hit that note. The entire class cheered for him and Isaiah was beaming ear to ear. Fast waaaaay forward to his senior photo shoot where he graced me with smiles ear to ear, showing off those Hanson dimples.

Challenge of the shoot : give the client a TON of diversity in angles, poses and backdrops at ONE location and in ONE outfit. Challenge accepted!

This location was a beloved location for Isaiah – it’s a really rustic park (no restroom!) with a walking trail, covered in tree branches (did a mention another challenge of the shoot was green casts?). I’m so thankful that my mirrorless camera’s white balance allows for adjusting not just the temperature (yellows and blues) but the tints (magentas and greens). Scroll for our results below!

So, if I was to negate the green casts, I would need a secondary source of light. That light source would create a glare on Isaiah’s glasses. Therefore, I had to opt for the darker spots in our location if a head tilt wasn’t enough to diminish the glare. Glare on glasses is far more difficult to edit than green casts – especially with the help of the tint adjustments in the camera’s white balance settings. And this location was Isaiah’s choice – if we were to get smiles out of him to make parents proud, this was going to be it! And I’m proud of we were able to create! Keep scrolling:

Isaiah – Thank you for the challenge of your session – the light, your handsome glasses, the location. Just like the work we put in to have you hit that high C in 6th grade, we worked for it here and came out beaming. I wish you all the best in your senior year and in your plans for after high school. You know how to stand before challenges and overcome them and that skill will serve you well in Life.

Best,

Carrie
