My time as a high school teacher taught me how to instantly connect with teens and make them feel comfortable in front of the camera. I love photographing high school seniors all over the Greater Des Moines Metro and Midwest (yes, I’m willing to travel).

Hi, I'm Carrie

From Black Shirts to Fire Trucks | Jackson’s Senior Session

If there were a superlative for “Most Adorable Senior Session of the Summer,” I’m pretty sure Jackson would take the title—no contest.

He’s dreamed of being a firefighter since he was little. His mom even has a photo of him dressed in a tiny firefighter costume, standing next to his white dog. So when he brought Winter, his now 12-year-old pup, to the Norwalk Fire Station for his senior photos? It looked like a real-life firefighter and his Dalmatian. The sweetest, most nostalgic kind of full-circle moment.

We photographed him with Engine 611 at Fire Station 61—a pumper truck that just arrived in 2023, and the pride of the department. Winter stood loyally by, and it was such a joy to capture this meaningful moment between a young man and the dream he’s actively building toward.

One of the best parts of the session? His mentor at the station, Ryan. Ryan’s name came up often—even after we left the firehouse. All I had to say was “Give me a Ryan smile,” and Jackson would chuckle, relax, and give me the real thing because Ryan was acting goofy behind me while we were at the station house.

Jackson has been part of the Black Shirt Crew at school since 6th grade—working lights, sound, and behind-the-scenes tech to make high school performances happen. He’s steady, reliable, and calm under pressure. He takes feedback well, has a great sense of humor, and brings peace to every space he’s in.

And here’s what’s extra impressive: by the time senior year begins, Jackson will already be a certified EMT. He’s wrapping up his summer course through DMACC and plans to continue there to earn his associate’s degree in Fire Science and later, Paramedicine. His dream? To serve as a firefighter and paramedic right here in Norwalk.

Jackson, you’ve got the heart, the courage, and the calm needed for this work—and I can’t wait to see you wear that uniform with pride.

As you said at the end of our shoot, “See you in less than 30 days!”
