One of the greatest compliments I can receive as a photographer isn’t a five-star review—it’s being invited back to photograph a family through every season of life.
This summer, I had the joy of photographing another chapter for one of my favorite families. Over the years, I’ve celebrated so many milestones with them, from Grant’s senior session (Class of 2021) to Anna and Katie’s twin senior session (Class of 2024). I’ve photographed their dad’s side of the family, and this time I had the privilege of meeting and photographing their mom’s side for an extended family session.
When Jen’s mom, Nancy, reached out to plan the session, we both spent time scouting locations to find the perfect fit. We considered one area before deciding that Easter Lake would be the best choice. With its beautiful waterfront views, level walking paths, and quieter setting, it checked every box for the group and gave us the perfect backdrop for an evening together.
One of the things I love most about extended family sessions is watching relationships unfold. Grandparents laughing with grandchildren, siblings catching up, cousins teasing one another, and everyone settling into the easy conversations that happen when family gathers together. Those are the moments that become just as meaningful as the traditional portraits.
This session brought a few new faces into the family story, too! It was so fun to see Grant’s girlfriend, Naomi, again after she helped with Anna and Katie’s hair and makeup during their senior sessions. I also had the pleasure of meeting Katie’s boyfriend, Chaz. Watching families grow and welcome new people into the fold is one of my favorite parts of photographing them year after year.
As we walked around Easter Lake, I loved hearing updates about my #CKSeniors. Grant is pursuing dentistry, Anna is studying law, and Katie is pursuing the sports marketing/event management pathway. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing former seniors step confidently into adulthood and then having the opportunity to photograph them again with the people who have supported them all along.
I’ve said it before, and sessions like this remind me why it’s true: I love becoming a family’s photographer. From senior portraits and family sessions to weddings and someday the next generation, it’s an incredible privilege to document the milestones that tell a family’s story over time.
To Nancy, Jen, Chris, Grant, Anna, Katie, and the entire crew—thank you for trusting me once again. Every time I get to hug your family is a good day, and I’m so thankful you’ve welcomed me into your story over the years. I can’t wait to see what chapter comes next.
